Sweet and Sour Tuna Salad served with Pita Chips
Who says tuna salad has to be made with tons of mayo and slathered between two pieces of bread?! That’s so old school! I’ve been making some changes to some of my favorite recipes lately by using some healthier alternatives and I knew an easy one to change up would be tuna salad! I wanted to transform it into a healthy lunch option for me and the boys, so I’ve made a Sweet and Sour Tuna Salad.
Tuna is such a healthy protein, but I’m particular about the kind of canned tuna I buy. I found the Ocean Naturals premium tuna at Walmart and what caught my eye was that it said “Premium Wild Skipjack Tuna – Responsibly Caught”. No fillers…the ingredient list just says Tuna, Salt and water. It also packs a wallop with 90mg of Omega 3’s and 15g of protein! When I cracked open the can, I was happy to find nice chunky tuna that flaked with a fork. LOVE that flakiness! I couldn’t help myself. I instantly inserted a forkful straight into my mouth! It tasted super fresh and didn’t have that overkill fishy smell.
Another really cool thing is that there are codes on the cans of Ocean Naturals premium tuna that you can enter on the Ocean Naturals website and it will tell you who caught your tuna and where it came from! Mine was caught by Captain Alec Aitken on the San Columbia vessel in New Zealand. Now that is just too cool.
Ocean Naturals believes that responsibly-caught means that their tuna comes from healthy sources that are harvested in ways that minimize the impact to the delicate ecosystem. They promise to respect Mother Nature and to provide their consumers with responsibly-caught seafood to serve our families. So – in short, Ocean Naturals makes products that are Good, Good for you and Good for the Planet!
I decided to make a Sweet & Sour Tuna Salad served on Pita Chips for lunch the other day. It turned out SO good and the family loved it. I didn’t want to just call it “Healthy Tuna Salad” cause that’s boring. This definitely has some sweet and sour components to it and I know you’ll love it.
(Getting some of the ingredients together)
Ok, enough yammering – right?! Here’s the Sweet and Sour Tuna Salad recipe:
- 2 – 6 oz. cans of Ocean Naturals premium tuna (drained)
- 3/4 c. nonfat Greek yogurt
- 1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts
- 1/2 c. red grapes (sliced in half or quartered)
- 1 dill pickle spear finely chopped
- 1 tsp. dill pickle juice
- Salt and Pepper to taste
- Add both cans of drained tuna into a large mixing bowl.
- Add the rest of the ingredients in and stir until completely combined.
- Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
