It’s summer and the kids are home! Are you dreading the summer brain drain? You know what the summer brain drain is?! Research shows that kids can lose one to three months of learning over the summer. Talk about taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back!! To prevent this, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry is offering up a fun and free online science program called Summer Brain Games that will keep kids learning this summer and prevent the “summer brain drain.”
We registered for the Summer Brain Games! Each week throughout the summer, the Museum of Science and Industry online kit will feature an experiment or science challenge that you can easily do at home with your kiddos (with some adult supervision). These experiments mostly include items that you can find around the house. You can sign up here for free! It’s offered in both English and Spanish. You’ll also get a pass to come to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry for free this summer! This is great if you live in Chicago or are planning to visit this summer!
We made a hydroponic garden using a 2 liter bottle, a cut up sock and some torn cardboard. We transplanted a plant from outside just to see what happens. We’re going to take a trip to the garden store for some seed and make another one and see if we can grow a vegetable!! Eli got a little creative with Thomas the Tank Engine stickers! 😉 We also made a rain gauge using another 2 liter bottle…that was fun and easy! Now, we just need some more rain to measure.
The kids really enjoy these brain games! I would suggest letting them pick which ones they’d like to try first to encourage some excitement. The instructions for each challenge are easy to follow. It’s fun to read aloud each instruction and have the kids do as much as they can alone, but then help when needed. More hands on learning!!
Now for the super cool part! I’m giving away a Family Four Pack (value $76.00), which includes tickets to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. (Tickets are valid through the end of 2013.). Just use the Rafflecopter Form below to enter to win! Giveaway ends 7/9/13 at 11:59pm EST.
