How You Can Do More With Your Dollar to Help Improve Kids Reading Skills

April 7, 2015 by Jenni 306 Comments

This post brought to you by Purina. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Sweet Pennies From Heaven.

eli reading Reading is one of THE most important skills a child will learn. My little guy loves to read, thank goodness. That’s why I’m excited to tell you about what’s going on with Purina and Dollar General! During April, shoppers can Do More With Their Dollar. Not only will they save on Purina pet products, but they will also help improve kids reading skills and self confidence!

reading-1 Purina has partnered with Dollar General to grow awareness and share the importance of literacy. I had NO idea, but studies have actually shown that when kids read to their pets, their reading skills and confidence improve! Say what??!! How incredibly awesome is that?! I’ve never thought about it before, but it totally makes sense. Sooo, we’re reading to our pet. Little man and daddy are reading a new book to Izzy, our boxer. She’s a captive audience, I tell you.

In 2010, the University of California did a 10-week study where young children read out loud to dogs and the result showed a 12% increase in their reading skills! Kids feel more relaxed and they know that their pets are faithful and true. Kids naturally enjoy interacting with their pets and pets teach so many great lessons to our children. Make sure to visit Dollar General and find out all of the other ways that pets can make a difference in the lives of your kids!

What Books Are Your Kids Reading Right Now? #MomsCheckIn

August 29, 2014 by Jenni 373 Comments

Moms Check In 1 Topic 5 moms

Hey mommas! I hope you’ve had a great week this week! TGIF, huh?! School started at the beginning of the month, so we’re ready for a long, 3 day weekend! We plan on being lazy this weekend. A friend of mine moved back home from out of state this week, so I’m going to spend some quality time with her tonight. Then the rest of the weekend I’ll probably veg out, watch some TV, eat a bunch of bad for me food and catch up on laundry. Blah.

Soo, just a fun question.
What books are YOUR kids reading right now?

Here are the books that our kids are all reading. Make sure to leave us a comment with what books your kids are obsessed with right now!! And hey! If you’re a mom blogger who would like to co-host one of our #MomsCheckIn weekly posts, be sure to fill out this form! We’d love to have you!

“My kids are obsessed with Star Wars. OBSESSED. That’s all they want to read right now and my daughter actually brought home three school library books this week, all Star Wars. She has a birthday coming up this week and I ordered her the Star Wars Character Encyclopedia, guaranteed to be both of my kids’ new favorite book in the coming days. If you need to know anything about any Star Wars or Clone Wars character, you know where to find me. I’ll get your question to the little experts that live in my house and get back to you. ;)”

“We have done a lot of reading this summer together – it’s been delightful. Sam’s current favorite books are from the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems. The incredible pictures are sure to induce giggles every time we read. The books are also perfect for Sam to start reading along too. It’s awesome to see him recognizing words and helping me with the story. I’m looking to many more story times together this fall!”

– Stephanie is the mom to Sam and the author of Spaceships and Laser Beams. If you ever need party ideas her site is the place to visit! Specializing in all things boy, it’s full of inspiration! Follow her on Twitter here!

“I am so happy I have a reader. Joshua is actually a speed reader so we go through tons of books at our house! His teacher set a goal for each child to read 40 books this year at school and a week and a half into school and he’s done. He is in middle school this year and although he reads a lot on his own, I still try to read out loud to him at bedtime. Sometimes he will complain that it’s ‘baby-ish’, but he really does love it! We recently finished Treasure Hunters by James Patterson and it was really good! (And they just came out with a sequal! HOORAY!) He also loved the Doctor Proctor’s Fart Powder Trilogy. Because what boy doesn’t love titles like that?

– Amanda is the mom to Joshua and owns It’s a Fabulous Life. If you are looking for a one stop place for all things mom, It’s a Fabulous Life is it! Full of recipes, fashion, DIY projects, recipes and parenting articles it’s the place for all of Mom’s favorites to come together! Follow her on Twitter here!

“Our son has always loved books, but he’s just now beginning to show an interest in reading. Before, it was always about the pictures. He loves any “character” books like Thomas the Tank Engine, Toy Story, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Frozen, you get the picture! Right now he’s reading a Clifford book he got from school.”

Introducing “My Farm Friends” from I See Me!
Personalized Children’s Books and Accessories

We were introduced to the personalized books from I See Me! back a year or so ago and we instantly fell in love with them. I remember when I was pregnant, hoping and praying that the little man would love books and reading. Sure enough, he does. Since we did our earlier I See Me! personalized book review, they’ve grown with new books and accessories!

The new “My Farm Friends” theme is beyond stinking adorable!! I love all the accessories too that you can get alongside the board book. A personalized puzzle and coloring book, stickers, lunchbox….all just wayyyyy too cute! The kids will delight in learning about all the different animals that live on the farm and discovering the sounds each makes! They’ll also love seeing their photo and name incorporated into the illustrations!

If you’re looking for a personalized gift for a baby shower, birthday, Christmas, or any other occasion, you should stop by I See Me! and see what they’ve got. There are many different themes and occasions to see besides the “My Farm Friends”. You can purchase gift certificates for expecting mommas and sign up for their email newsletter for all the latest and greatest info. I’m always getting really awesome coupon codes in my email from them! One other thing I love is that you can get birthday reminders for all those kiddos in the family!

Their products are just such a fun and innovative way to explore and learn. Personalized items have changed over the years. I See Me! takes it over the top by adding photos and the kids’ names throughout the book. I know you’ll love them just as much as we do. Do you have any occasions coming up that I See Me! gifts would be perfect for?
