There is just something so warm and comforting about old mason jars. They remind me so much of my time growing up in the country. My mom collected antiques and primitives my whole life, and I inherited her passion for collecting as well. My mom had an old glass jar of buttons that now belongs to me. I wanted to give that old jar of buttons a purpose other than just sitting on a table, so I created a mason jar lamp out of it with a lamp kit I found online.
These are so simple to create. Honestly though…I wanted to use the same rusty lid that was already on the jar so we just drilled a hole in it and used everything but the lid that came with the kit. It looks much better I think, although there are several kits that are zinc or have that weathered galvanized look. Just depends on what sort of look you’re going for.
This is the old jar of buttons that belonged to my mom. Love that rusty lid.
Add your lamp kit to the lid (we used the original lid) and then screw onto the jar.
Once you get the kit, you just attach the lid to your mason jar, add a bulb, and it’s ready to work! Add whatever sort of lamp shade you prefer.
(I really like these burlap lamp shades)!!
As for inside the jar…there are endless possibilities. We also have another one that has old thread spools and then a 3rd one that has old wooden kids blocks.
Another lamp made with old spools of thread in a ball jar.
These mason jar lamps are a fun way to preserve memories or keepsakes – like those old buttons that belonged to my mom. These make fun gifts too, or sentimental ones for your mom, sister, or best friend. Do you have a mason jar lamp? What sorts of things do you keep in yours?? Drop us a comment and tell us about them…we’d love to hear!
If you want to make your own DIY Mason Jar Lamp, you can find the kits and jars at most retailers or hardware stores. Older mason jars are always better of course, but if you can’t find any…you can always buy new. If you prefer to shop online, you can find both the lamp kits and the mason jars on Amazon.
