Our Best Child Safety Tips | November is Child Safety Month

Child Safety Tips

I didn’t know until now, but November is Child Safety Month. Whether you are baby proofing your home for the first time or if you have 10 kids, it’s still just as important. I remember how nervous I was about bringing home the baby from the hospital, yet at the same time thinking, “He can’t even roll over yet, how can he get into anything?!” but honestly….those times come faster than you realize. We tend to get comfortable and don’t think until it’s too late….after he’s already climbing on things, to put those blind strings up high. Or to put a lock on that toilet that he’s OH so fascinated with.

Here are some tips that myself and our Moms Check In moms are sharing this week. You can learn more about who our Moms Check In moms are below! If you have some child safety tips that you’d like to share, PLEASE, drop us a comment! We want to hear them!

Amanda-626x1024“My son is older (6th grade) and we’ve worked really hard to keep communication open. He knows he can come to me with things that are going on. We talk openly about safety a lot. Josh has Autism and one thing about it is that he is so trusting. I love that he sees the good in people, but we talk about how there are times that he shouldn’t always go with the flow. I’m glad he feels safe to come to me with concerns he has and I really want to keep that dialog open!“

“There are child locks for so many things now. A tip I learned years ago, was to get down on the floor – child level – and it kind of opens up a whole new view of what kids see and can get into. Child proof things before you actually NEED to, that way disasters won’t sneak up on you. Consider getting child locks for things like your toilets, stoves, refrigerators, freezers, doors and especially any cabinets or spaces that hold household cleaners!”

LindsayHeadShot3Border-300x300“I think common sense goes a long way. Go with your gut and use that mom instinct to keep your kids out of danger. That being said, one pet peeve of mine is when I see moms prop their infant car seats on top of grocery carts. That’s not a safe place for little babies. Put them down inside the cart or wear them in a baby carrier or sling. It scares me to think what might happen should the cart get bumped and the carrier topple over. Yikes!“

– Lindsay is the mom of 2 and author of See Mom Click. She shares great deals, Disney happenings and recipes. You can follow her on Twitter here!

stephanie“ I don’t have a ton of tips beyond the obvious but I would say to stand firm in your belief that you are your child’s advocate. Don’t let other’s silence you. If your parents or friends or doctors or anyone else thinks you’re just being overprotective or silly or a “first time parent”, ignore those voices and go with your gut.“

– Stephanie is the mom to Sam and the author of Spaceships and Laser Beams. If you ever need party ideas her site is the place to visit! Specializing in all things boy, it’s full of inspiration! Follow her on Twitter here!
