Have you heard of Keep Good Going? It’s an idea that I heard about through New York Life. It’s the idea of doing personal good that will positively affect everyone in your family. It’s those great life lessons and the good that you want to pass on to others you care about. In big or small ways, because you know it can shape their life experiences, in a positive way.
Back a few years ago, my family and I had the honor and privilege of taking care of my grandfather at home. We lovingly call him papaw.
We took care of him for close to 6 months. In that time, I got to learn more about him than I ever knew before. He taught us all a great life lesson…
At the end of the day, our family is all that matters.
I know that sounds obvious, right?! But the truth is, in those 6 months he didn’t talk about work or bills. He didn’t talk about tv shows or the weather. He didn’t talk about the hum-drum things of a normal day while he was young and raising a family.
What he did talk about was family. His wife. His children. His brothers and sisters. His grandparents. Memories. He talked about the good times and the struggles his family went through.
Thinking back on that time, it’s made me realize that I need to slow down and pay more attention to what matters most to me. My family. All too often I find myself in one room, the husband in another room and little man playing or watching TV in his own room.
I’ve challenged myself and I’m challenging you. Set aside a time each day where you spend quality family time together. Whether it’s dinner, watching a movie together, playing a game, or just sitting around the table talking. We can pass this value down to our own children, and they’ll pass it down to theirs one day. I agree that families should spend time together every chance they get. Time is precious and if flies by in a flash, so we need to enjoy it while we have it.
I love the idea behind this. I think good deeds can affect the whole family.
I will keep good going by showing it to my kids and demonstrating to them. They know what good is and we just have to continue practicing it!
I try to teach my kids to keep doing good – by doing the right thing and always looking for ways they can help others!
The older I get, the more I do realize that family is what matters! They will or at least should always be there for you!
I make sure to SKype with my mother every Wednesday. We Skype all day, and craft together. I also make time to play online games with my Dad and brother.
Isabella…that is AWESOME!!! I love that you do that. So, they’re long distance then? It is just so cool that there are things like Skype to keep families close together, especially VISUALLY!! Love it!
Family is what matters. Teaching my family the importance of valuing family is a big deal to me.
Family does matter, but when they are 89, lose their sanity and start to call you the spawn of satan, you start questioning your choices! I hope that when I am old I age graciously and keep my manners. That way I’ll be a part of the family they still want around!
I am trying to visit my parents more often, as we all live so far apart! It is so important to stay connected and do things as a family!
I find myself reminding myself a lot lately of what matters when I’m finding myself getting really overwhelmed or TOO into work. I run my own small business so I tend to devote a lot of time to managing it and growing it, but I need to remember not to neglect the people in my life and experiences I could be having because at the end of the day, that’s what will matter most.

We have family rules about certain things. No devices at the table. No tv during meals. Family move nights and game Nights mean no electronics.
It’s pretty much the same with us that family comes first. We make time for each other and always support each other.

I always think back to the comment that people say – that when someone is on their death bed they sure don’t say they wish they would of worked more – and that’s something that I’m trying to do good on. Though a good work ethic is important, it’s also important to realize that life is short. We need to spend more time with our family, other things can wait.

Well after nearly dying in an EF5 tornado and watching my dad recover from his massive stroke which has left him unable to talk or walk I’d have to say appreciating your time with family is the most important. I love the concept of Keep Good Going. Too often people get wrapped up in themselves or technology and forget about quality family time. I enjoy hearing stories about my family from my grandmother.
Both my and my husband’s family are close knit. We emphasize family over everything and I’m so happy my children have two awesome families to cherish.
What a beautiful post. I love having my grandmother here and learning all about our family from her. I have made a point to take the boys up there every week for about 15 minutes so that they can get to know her. How many people can say they “really” knew their great-grandmother?!

We keep good going in our family by banding together to take care of them. We went and lived with my in-laws when my FIL was diagnosed with cancer and we helped take care of him until he passed. We then moved next door to my husband’s grandfather during his last year. This was helpful to the family members whose situations made it where they couldn’t always be around, and my husband got to spend time with two people he cared for deeply before they past.
Family is something that is very important to me. I was raised as an only child and always wanted to have a big family. Now I have 4 kids and a family of six.
We teach our girls empathy for others and to be like Jesus. We want them to care about others and volunteer, give their money, and pray for people in need.
