Coffee Filter Wreath Tutorial – Easy Home Decor Craft

Valentine’s Day Coffee Filter Wreath

Ever wanted to try your hand at making a coffee filter wreath? I made this one last year, around Valentine’s Day. I’m not gonna lie. Valentine’s Day is one holiday that I don’t really decorate the house for too much. I do have a few favorite Valentine’s Day recipes, though. We tend to celebrate more with food than decor for Valentine’s Day, however, this sweet coffee filter wreath adds a touch of “love” to our front door!

Aside from all the love, romance, flowers, and chocolate….we’re celebrating because SPRING is on the way! Yes, I know more cold and snow is on the way but I’m dreaming of green grass and flowers popping up from the ground.

This coffee filter wreath is seriously SO easy to make, and so frugal. I found ALL kinds of them on Pinterest, and honestly there are SO many different colors and some of them are downright fancy schmancy looking! This was my first one and I’m very happy with how it turned out.

how to dye coffee filters for crafts

Before you get started though, you need to decide what color you want your wreath to be. Here’s my How to Dye Coffee Filters for Crafts tutorial. Make sure to visit that link, it also explains how to quickly DRY your dyed filters so you can get on with your projects without having to wait.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 200-300 dyed coffee filters in colors you choose (you can use more, the more you use the fuller the wreath will be)
  • 14″ styrofoam wreath
  • plenty of stick pins (200-300) or a hot glue gun
  • Decorative ribbon to hang your wreath

Now that you have all your goodies ready to go, pick a seat (preferably in front of the TV watching your favorite show!) and get to work. It seems tedious, but honestly – the time goes by pretty fast and your wreath will be done before you know it!

coffee filter wreath tutorial

Instructions:

Take each coffee filter and fold it in half, then fold it in half again – like shown above. Now you should have a triangular funnel shape. Holding the tip with your fingers, kind of scrunch and fluff up the other end….like you scrunch your hair?! That’s about the only way I can explain it, haha!! The end result of all this scrunching and fluffing is a fuller looking wreath.

Remember in Legally Blonde – “Bend & Snap”?
Okay, now think “Scrunch & Fluff”

Say this each time you pick up a new filter. Just for fun! 😉

coffee filter wreath tutorial

After you get all of your filters scrunched and fluffed, it’s time to start attaching them to your wreath. Beginning on the inside of the wreath, attach each filter by the tip using a stick pin or glue gun. Work your way around the inner section of the wreath until you have a row finished. Then start a new row, and keep going until you’ve made 3-4 rows from the inside to the outside.

Don’t worry about attaching filters to the backside of the wreath, as it will be laying against the wall or door. If you notice holes here and there, you can fill them in as needed.

Now, I’m so excited with how my coffee filter wreath turned out – I’m thinking of new colors to use for different holidays and seasons! They’re fun to make and I just love how frugal they are too. I really wanna make a solid white one and a solid brown one. Those look really classy looking and honestly, you wouldn’t even have to dye them. For the brown ones, you can just buy the all natural brown filters! Woot!!

What color would you make your coffee filter wreath?

Easy DIY Black Cat Pillow. This is the sweetest primitive or farmhouse decor Halloween craft, especially for beginners! www.sweetpenniesfromheaven.com

This is really a simple project!  First, place your pillowcase on your pillow.

Easy DIY Black Cat Pillow. This is the sweetest primitive or farmhouse decor Halloween craft, especially for beginners! www.sweetpenniesfromheaven.com

Find a spot for the eyes to go.  You will want to place these about a third of the way down your pillow.

Thread your needle with the black thread and sew the button on.  You will want to make sure that you go all the way through the pillow at least once when sewing the buttons on to pull the buttons into the pillow a little bit.  Sew the other eye on the same way.

Next you will sew your button nose the same way that you sewed your eyes on.

The whiskers are up next.  Thread your needle with the metallic embroidery floss.  Starting from just under the button nose, add some wispy whiskers.  There is really no wrong way to do this!  I found it is easiest to make one very long stitch to create the whisker.

Your pillow is complete!

Fun, pretty and perfectly primitive – this pillow is something that you would expect to find in a high end boutique! Everyone will be so impressed when you tell everyone you made it yourself.  Just get prepared for when your friends ask you to make them one as well!

11 genius plastic bag hacks Hometalk board

Don’t you love hacks?! I mean, seriously……I always say “Why didn’t I think of that?!” when I find a killer idea! Some of them are life-changers!! I put together a post back last year – 21 Ways to Reuse Plastic Bags. While I was searching around on Hometalk, I put together a board with some other plastic bag hacks and craft ideas so I wanted to share it with you.

Visit my plastic bag hacks Hometalk board to find all the different ideas!

What is Hometalk? If you’re not on Hometalk, then you’re really missing out. It’s basically Pinterest, but for Home & Garden ideas only. I love it over there. Make sure that you follow me on Hometalk – cause you know we all love to follow eachother!

There are many different ways that I reuse plastic bags but so many ideas I’ve never thought of. Since my house is usually overflowing with them, I’m interested to see all the different ways I can reuse them!

I’ve now enlisted the help of Hometalk to help me organize my kitchen too. It’s a New Year and this week I’ve spent a ton of time organizing my kitchen cabinets. I live in an old farmhouse and I don’t have a ton of space in the kitchen…not even a pantry. Ugh. So I have to get creative when finding new ways to organize everything in there. Lastnight, I actually pulled EVERYTHING out of my pots/pans/mixing bowls/baking pans cabinets.

I was sitting in the middle of the kitchen floor when my husband walks in. He instantly turned and walked right back out. Hahahhaa! He knew what I was up to! I usually start those kinds of projects at night, so he walked out before I got the chance to wrangle him into helping me. Smart man. Smart, smart man. Hometalk has given me lots of great ideas that I can’t wait to put into use in my kitchen!

How do you reuse plastic bags? We want to know!

I invite you to follow me on Hometalk, Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

How to Dye Coffee Filters and DRY Them Quickly for Crafts

January 9, 2015 by Jenni 2,373 Comments

how to dye coffee filters for crafts

How to Dye Coffee Filters – and DRY them too!

Coffee filter crafts are all the rage and have been for awhile. I actually just made my first coffee filter wreath and it turned out way better than I expected it to. I’m one of those “on the fly” crafters so if I can do it, I know you can! There is a little prep work that needs to be done when making coffee filter crafts, if you’re planning on dying your filters a certain color. It’s not difficult at all, so I’m gonna show you how to dye coffee filters and how to DRY them fast too – so you don’t have to wait to get craftin’!

Here’s what you’ll need:

water

coffee filters

food coloring of your choice
(I wanted pink and cream, so I used red food coloring on half of the filters and then I coffee stained the other half just using really strong day old brewed coffee.)

how to dye coffee filters

Instructions:

Decide how many coffee filters need to be dyed, depending on your craft.

Fill a bowl or container with water, starting with 2-4 cups of water. Then pour in some food coloring and try a filter or two out to see if it’s the right shade. Add more food coloring to get a little darker or more water to lighten the dye.

**HINT: Make them a little darker than you actually want, because after they’re dry – they’re going to be a little lighter in color.

After you get the shade you want, begin placing coffee filters in and soaking them in the dye. Just leave them submerged for a few seconds, then wring the dyed water out of the filters with your hands, and then lay flat on a cookie sheet or another surface. You want to make sure to squeeze most of the water out, so the filters aren’t dripping wet. You can dye 10-15 filters at a time to save a little time. Now you’re ready to dry them!

how to dye coffee filters

How to DRY dyed coffee filters quickly:

I’ve read online that just leaving dyed coffee filters out to air dry takes forevahhh!!!! I am not a patient crafter. At all. So, I decided to just stick those babies in the clothes dryer on low-medium heat. Literally put the filters IN the clothes dryer and dried them in 2 minute increments so they wouldn’t singe. DO NOT put them in and walk away from the dryer folks. We’re drying paper here, not a load of towels! You don’t want to use a high heat – just a low to medium. And again, DO NOT walk away from these as you’re waiting.

how to dye coffee filters and dry them quickly

Check the filters every 2 minutes. You’ll eventually start to feel them getting dryer and dryer. Just dry them in 2 minute increments, and after about 5 times or so they should be pretty dry or at least starting to dry. Once they’re dry, I just put mine in a laundry basket and went and sat on the couch and made 2 piles. A pink pile and a cream pile. Just flatten them out as you stack them. You can store them in a coffee can or similar until you’re ready to use them.

Here’s what I did with mine……..

Make Homemade Christmas Ornaments with This Salt Dough Recipe (Fun for the Kiddos)

December 17, 2014 by Jenni 727 Comments

Homemade christmas cookies and angel cutter on a kitchen table.

Christmas for me, besides the obvious reason, is about memories and creating new memories for my son! One thing I remember growing up was making homemade Christmas ornaments with my mom and sisters using an old fashioned salt dough recipe. My mom was always such the crafter – and if it could be made by hand, she did it.

Here’s a fun and super easy salt dough recipe that you can use to make homemade Christmas ornaments! All you need is all-purpose flour, salt, water, and cookie cutters! Ohh, and cinnamon if you’d like to make them darker in color and smell yummy too! We make them both ways…with and without.

homemade christmas ornaments with salt dough

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 and 1/2 cups warm water
  • Cinnamon (optional. Just start with a little and keep adding and mixing until you get the desired color.)

Directions:

Combine flour (and optional cinnamon) and salt together and mix well in a large mixing bowl. Then slowly add the warm water and mix with a large spoon. After I mix it as good as I can with the spoon, I go in with my hands mixing and kneading until it’s all soft and combined really well. Flour your workspace (I just put it straight on my counter) and then plop the dough onto the flour. Use a rolling pin to roll the dough flat until it’s about 1/8″ thick.

Start cutting shapes out with your cookie cutters. I have several that I’ve used that were my moms. Spray a cookie sheet with spray and place your cut out shapes on it, then use the end of a paper clip or a tooth pick to make holes where you want the ribbon or string placed. I kind of swirled the paper clip around until I got the hole as big as I wanted it.

Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour or until they’re hard. Let them cool, decorate with paint and then you can paint them with a clear coat to preserve them.

Homemade Christmas Ornaments

After they’ve dried, add some string or ribbon and decorate your tree. You could also use some ornament hooks if you have some leftover. I usually have a few in the bottom of the box that I keep all of my ornaments in.

**When you’re putting up your tree, ornaments, and decorations, make sure to put these in a nice dry place. They can mold if stored in a place with alot of moisture.

Will you be making homemade ornaments with your kids?

DIY Black Feather Halloween Wreath

October 9, 2014 by 415 Comments

This post is part of a 2-part series in partnership with Sverve and Farm Rich. All opinions are 100% my own. #smokehousebbq

I love fall and Halloween decor and while I do put out things that are more for the kids, I love to add a little spooky elegance like my DIY Halloween Wreath!  I found all the stuff to make this wreath at my local dollar store and it was quick and easy to put together.  I get so many compliments on it from kids and grown ups alike.

DIY Halloween Wreath

We enjoy having Halloween parties and there’s nothing more awesome than a fun wreath to meet and greet guests with at the door. This one is so easy to make.

DIY Halloween Wreath

Supplies:

  • 1 grapevine wreath or other wreath form (wire or foam will work just fine)
  • 2-3 black feather boas
  • hot glue
  • orange ribbon
  • black ribbon
  • hot glue and glue gun

Instructions: Heat the hot glue gun and begin gluing the feather boas to the wreath.  You will want the feathers to be thick and full so you’ll probably use all 3 of the boas.  You’ll use quite a bit of glue to keep them in place.  You could also use a fine floral wire to attach the boas if you prefer. After the feathers are attached, wrap the orange ribbon around the wreath and boas several times.  This is where the bow will be placed.  It could be at the bottom of the wreath or off to one side.  I chose to put it off to the side.  Tie the ribbon tightly on the backside to secure it in place. DIY Halloween Wreath Craft To make the bow for the front side of the wreath, fold the orange and black ribbon back and forth several times before tying a bow around it.  This will create a bow with many layers of ribbon. Hot glue the bow to the orange ribbon you wrapped around the wreath. Fluff the feathers and your wreath is ready to hang! This wreath is great for the front door or to display on your wall in any room of your home!  It’s the perfect addition to your fall or Halloween decor and a fun conversation piece at your Halloween parties!

Planning a Halloween Party?

If you’re planning a Halloween party or are attending one and needing to take some yummy food, make sure to check out the new Farm Rich Smokehouse line of products found at Walmart. This heat and serve line is perfect for any party or a weeknight meal at home and they cost just $6.97! Here are the varieties:

  • Pulled Beef Brisket in a Sweet & Smoky BBQ Sauce
  • Pulled Pork BBQ
  • Double Rubbed Dry Smoked Pork
  • Double Rubbed Dry Smoked Chicken

Towards the end of the month we’ll be heading to Walmart for a taste test. You can taste test them too, at your local Walmart! Just check your local Walmart for dates/times and more details. Ohh, and hey!! Here’s a $1 coupon to snag a deal with!

How to Get Rid of Ground Moles – The Most Effective Way

September 3, 2014 by Jenni 1,917 Comments

how to get rid of ground moles

How to Get Rid of Ground Moles

I’ve lived in the country all of my life. Since I was itty bitty, I remember my daddy trying to figure out how to get rid of ground moles. He tried EVERY way possible to get rid of them. He tried Coca-Cola, bubble gum, the wind mill contraptions, standing guard with a shovel, and even sitting for hours with a gun. He also called them every name under the sun. He was always a DIY’er, by nature, so he wasn’t interested in hiring someone to take care of the moles for him.

Before I start getting hate comments, we LOVE animals. We have 2 dogs, and raised all sorts of animals. Ground moles, however, I can live without. Yes, they’re furry and they’re one of God’s creatures. But a fly is one of God’s creatures too and I have NO issues whatsoever, with being the maker of their demise!

Izzy, my boxer – God love her heart. She tries her darndest to catch ground moles. She’s just not fast enough. Here she is all brown nosed after trying to catch one. She even had dirt caked on her tongue!

Moles eat grubs, so people say to use this product and that product to get rid of grubs. That’s fine, but that won’t keep moles away because moles also eat earthworms. You don’t want to rid your yard of earthworms though, because those are good for the soil. So what is a person to do?

Ground mole traps are the MOST effective way!
It’s the tried and true method!

how to get rid of ground moles

There are many types of ground mole traps available. They’re really the only thing that has ever been proven as trustworthy. This particular trap, the Victor Out O’ Sight Mole Trap, has TONS of awesome reviews and if you’ll spend some time reading those reviews, you’ll get lots of tips and information. Several of them explain just how to set the trap and what has worked best for them!

We’ve always had luck with traps over the years, but we’re giving this one a go. We’ve never tried this particular type of trap yet – so I’m anxious to put some of these tips in the reviews to use and see what happens!

Have you had any luck with a particular mole trap? If so, tell us about it!!! We WANT to know!!

Flip Flops – DIY Fabric Flip Flops

July 18, 2014 by 300 Comments

Flip Flops are one of my favorite things about summer!  I passed this on to my daughter which is good and bad.  Because she loves them so much, we seem to be always picking up more flip flops on sale which means flip flops everywhere!  The other thing it means is that we sometimes are getting flip flops that aren’t great quality and fall apart.  The inexpensive foam flip flops are great because the come in so many colors.  The problem is that the straps often pull out and then they are no good.

Well, we came up with a fun way to upcycle those into new flip flops!  In fact, sometimes we just cut the straps off of new flip flops to make these fun fabric straps because they are so fun!

Flip Flops - DIY Fabric Flip Flops

Flip Flops – DIY Fabric Flip Flops

Supplies:

  • 12 scraps of fabric 1″-2″ wide and 12″ long
  • flip flops with straps removed
  • scissors

Flip Flops - DIY Fabric Flip Flops

Instructions:

Hold 6 scraps of fabric together and twist one end tightly.  Insert the twisted end into the hole where you removed the toe strap of the flip flop.  Turn the flip flop over to the back side and separate the fabric into 2 sections.  Tie a firm know to hold the fabric in place.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Turn the flip flop back over and begin braiding each set of 3 strips together to create 2 straps.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

When you’ve reached the end of the strips, insert the braided strap into the strap hole.  Make sure the braided fabric is pulled to the right length for the strap.  Knot the fabric on the back side as you did with the toe strap.

Your flip flops are ready to wear!

The great thing about these flip flops is that you can make so many variations!  These are inexpensive, even found at the dollar store.  With so many adorable fabrics available you could make a pair for every summer outfit!  You can also get creative and use other techniques for the straps.  Think of all the knots you might use for making friendship bracelets and turn those into flip flop straps!

Have you ever made your own flip flops?

DESPICABLE ME - DIY Tic Tac Toe

DESPICABLE ME – DIY Tic Tac Toe

July 3, 2014 by 1,753 Comments

Who doesn’t love the DESPICABLE ME movies?!?  I think grown ups and kids alike will agree that minions are just about the most adorable little creatures around.  This DESPICABLE ME craft is not only fun to make but it will give endless hours of fun for the family during game nights, on rainy days, in the backyard, or even on road trips! DESPICABLE ME - DIY Tic Tac Toe

DESPICABLE ME – DIY Tic Tac Toe

Supplies:

  • 8 rocks that are fairly smooth in round or oval shapes
  • craft paint in blue, yellow, white, black, and purple
  • silver paint pen
  • rectangular or square framed chalkboard
  • chalk
  • several small paint brushes

Instructions: There really isn’t much to making this craft besides painting the rocks.  This is also the fun part!  I love painting rocks and my kiddos really enjoyed getting in on the minion making! You’re going to split the rocks into 2 groups – purple minions and yellow so the opponents pieces are easy to tell apart.

Begin by painting 4 rocks yellow and 4 purple.  You’ll want to cover the entire face of each rock with 2 coats of paint, allowing the paint to dry between coats. Once the yellow and purple paint has dried, use black paint to add the goggle bands to both colors of minions.  Also use the black paint to give the purple minions “pants”.

While the black paint dries, use the blue paint to add the “pants” to the yellow minions. After the black paint is completely dry, add a small white circle to the black goggle band for the eyes of the minions.  Give some minions 1 eye and some 2. When the white paint is totally dry, use a small amount of black paint to give the eyes a pupils and to add a mouth for each minion. To finish up the minions, use a silver paint pen to outline the white circle eyes to complete the look of the goggles. DESPICABLE ME - DIY Tic Tac Toe Use a piece of chalk to draw the tic tac toe lines onto the framed chalkboard and your DESPICABLE ME – DIY Tic Tac Toe game is ready to use!

Check out this great DESPICABLE ME treat idea!

4th of July Crafts – Button Art American Flag

Supplies:

  • 8″ x 10″ white canvas
  • shirt buttons in red (about 100), white (about 100), and blue (about 50)
  • craft glue
  • picture frame (I used a frame for an 8″ x 10″ photo from the Dollar Store and removed the glass)

Instructions:

While I was pretty particular about making my flag and making sure I had 50 white spaces in my blue buttons for each star and the correct number of red and white stripes, you can certainly get creative and let this a fun easy flag.

Begin by sorting your buttons and laying them out on the canvas to plan exactly how you want to have them displayed.

Once you’ve sorted the buttons and decided on the layout, spread a thin layer of glue and begin placing your buttons.  I worked from the top left, adding the blue buttons first.  Spread the glue in small amounts so you can easily attach the buttons before the glue begins to dry.

4th of July - Button Art American Flag

After you have placed all of the blue buttons, add a strip of glue and begin attaching the red and white buttons in alternating rows.  I used buttons that were all the same size and color but you could do varying shades and sizes of red or white to give added texture.

4th of July - Button Art American Flag

Allow the craft glue to dry completely.  It should dry clear leaving you only able to see the buttons and canvas.

Once the glue is completely dry, insert the canvas into a photo frame for display.  Not only is a great 4th of July Crafts project but you can use this for patriotic decor year around!  What kinds of 4th of July Crafts do you make?

How to Container Garden – A Vegetable Container Gardening Guide for Beginners

How to Container Garden
A Vegetable Container Gardening Guide for Beginners

Growing vegetables in a container is a great way to grow vegetables when you just don’t have the room or know how to start a full size garden bed. To get started you only need a few supplies along with the seeds that you want planted for the summer. Once you are ready to begin, there are some basic rules of thumb to know about. Learning how to container garden really is a lot easier for anyone growing vegetables for the first time.

Choosing a Container

The container that you are gardening in is an important first step because you want it to be able to provide a suitable growing space for the entire season. The style that you choose is entirely personal, but there are requirements that must be met. Your container must have holes in the bottom for draining. A deeper container is better for growing vegetables and a wider container makes it possible to add a companion plant.

You can use most anything that is suitable, like wooden planters or plastic. Even terra cotta pots. I prefer wooden cedar planters because they’re naturally rot resistant. This set of 4 cedar planters below is perfect because they’ve already got the drain holes. There are a couple of smaller ones for your smaller plants…then a couple of bigger ones for the larger plants.

Starting From Seed or Transplants

Container Vegetable gardening from seed or transplants that you purchase are both possible with time. Seeds should be started indoors, well before being planted into your container. You will be able to find a better variety of tomatoes, peppers, peas and lettuce to grow when you begin with seeds.

Growing from transplants is great if you do not get an early jump on planting. Transplants are already weeks old, so choose those that look healthy and whose roots are not coming out of the container they are in.

how to container garden

Choose Your Vegetables

Decide what to grow so that you have suitable supplies available to provide for their needs. It will also help when it comes to knowing the number and sizes of pots available and how much potting soil to purchase. Then decide where you are going to place your pots for maximum sunshine.

Tomatoes, peppers, peas and lettuce are the easiest vegetables to start with and all well suited to container gardening. Other fun choices are potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zuchini and other squash.

Plant and Care for Your Garden

Fill your pots with potting soil, five inches to the top for transplants, or two inches for seeds. Add your transplants or seed and fill with potting soil to just below the lip of the pot. Be sure not to overcrowd too many plants in one container, as this can hinder growth.

Water thoroughly after planting, and continue watering daily immediately after planting to ensure germination of seeds and that the plant roots establish themselves. Make sure to feed your plants often too, with Miracle Gro. Place your pot in a sunny corner, avoid moving once it is there, and try to cluster containers close together to encourage growth.

Learning how to container garden, is really that simple! You’re well on your way to enjoying fresh veggies that you grew yourself. Give yourself a pat on the back!!

15+ Homemade Cleaner Recipes That Will Rock Your Socks

Don’t diss the homemade cleaner recipes!

Have you ever read the labels on the back of your household cleaners? Seriously. Not only do you need to be a scientist to MAKE the cleaners, you need to be one to understand the labels too! Honestly though, the biggest downfall for me is the cost. Before you know it, that $3 bottle of window cleaner is gone and you don’t have the clean windows anymore to prove you used it all. Right? I see the smeared peanut butter, the sticky fingerprints, evidence of a dog lick or two….

….and OMG!!! Is that…..dried snot???!!! WHERE’S THE WINDEX!?! And the bleach??!!

I’ve found tons of awesome homemade cleaner recipes that are green, cheap, and half of which are even safe enough to EAT! Not that I would. Except for the vinegar. That’s pretty decent on salad. 🙂 Check these out and save yourself some cash! There are still some cleaners that I will continue to buy, but for the most part…I try to stick to the natural stuff!

Homemade Laundry Detergent
This is the detergent I use ALL the time. I love love love it. My husband is a welder and his clothes are filthy dirty when he comes home from work. This detergent cleans his clothes and removes the stinky smell too. Best part is…it only costs around $0.02 to $0.03 per load! Say WHAT?! Yep!

Homemade Carpet Deodorizer
Even though we have mostly hardwood floors, we do still have area rugs and one room that is carpeted so I still like to keep carpet deodorizer. This recipe is also perfect for couches, chairs or any other upholstered furniture. We have dogs so it’s nice to keep the furniture smelling fresh too!

How to Dry Flowers

How to Dry Flowers For Crafts, Potpourri or Other Home Decor

February 26, 2014 by Jenni 1,932 Comments

How to Dry Flowers

I love flowers, when they’re nice and fresh…and pretty……..and alive. When they start slumping over, it makes me want to slump over too. It’s soooooooooo depressing when they start dying. Most of the time I just dump them straight in the trash to avoid a complete depression but sometimes I’ll just dry them out to make potpourri.

Did I just spell that right? Potporrie…potpourrie? I know it has a T in it.

The first time I ever dried a flower, I was as sappy then as I am now. Imagine a 12 year old, hormonal, cry at the drop of a hat – pre-teen girl. That was me. My grandma had passed and I wanted to keep a rose from the service. My mom showed me how to dry flowers, and now that same dried flower from Grandma’s service is in a box with some other keepsakes upstairs….20 some odd years later.

Okayyyyy….25 years later. Sheesh. Excuse me while I lather some wrinkle cream all over my face.

It’s so easy to do. I’ve got a dozen roses that my sweet feller bought me for Valentine’s Day. The day that they slumped (they were as dead as a door nail), I instantly yanked them out of their pretty vase and hung them to dry. I’m planning to make potpourri with them and they’re now hanging in my closet.

Oh yeah – I googled ‘potpourri’ and I did spell it right! Booyah!

Other people like to craft with dried flowers, some like to decorate with them. But me, I like potpourri. Now that I know I spelled it right, I can’t quit saying it. Po-purr-eeeeee!

how to dry flowers

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your dead-as-a-door-nail-flowers
  • Paper Towels
  • Scissors (or knife)
  • String
  • Plastic Clothes Hangers

Here’s How to Dry Flowers:

  • Take flowers out of the vase and dry stems really well with paper towels.
  • Cut off any thorns with scissors or knife. {I’m acting like your mother here….PLEASE don’t cut yourself!}
  • Remove dead leaves from the stems.
  • Cut one string for each flower. Cut the strings to about 7-10 inches in length.
  • Tie string to stem (upside down), then tie the flower to the bottom of a clothes hanger. You can hang several flowers from one hanger, you just don’t want them touching. Make sure they’re hanging upside down.
  • Place hanger(s) in a dim and dry spot. Closets are great. Somewhere with no humidity.
  • It may take 2-6 weeks before they’re completely dry.

how to dry flowersThe lighting is bad, but I just snapped this photo of these roses hanging from a hanger in my closet. I pulled it out of the closet and hung it on the closet door so there’d be enough light just for the photo, then I put them right back in the dark.

TIP: If you hang them in a closet, just make sure they’re not touching clothes or anything else. There are a couple of reasons for that. First – you don’t want the color of the flowers bleeding onto any clothes. Secondly, you may want to retain the shape of the flower. If it’s bumped up against something, it can flatten or mishape the flower.

TIP: Whatever you use them for, make sure that they’re placed away from humid spaces (even after they’re dry) because they can hold moisture and mold. You don’t want that…yuck!

TIP: Keep away from sunlight (even around windows) because the sun can and will fade the color of the flowers.

What’s your favorite way to use dried flowers? Do you craft with them, make potpourri, decorate with them? Let us know!!! We’d love to hear about it.

DIY Distressed Frame – How to Make a New Frame Look Old

February 17, 2014 by Jenni 2,278 Comments

I grew up in a home full of old antiques and primitive things. My mom and dad collected all of my life and I have a passion for the same things. The only downfall is, I can’t afford HALF of the antique things I’d love to have so I’ve learned how to make new things look old.

I recently wrote a post on framing old family favorite recipes to make fun keepsakes in the kitchen. The frame I used was a new picture frame but I wanted it to look old. So, I gave it an old chippy white paint look. It’s really easy to do and I wanted to share how to make a distressed frame for yourself. It’s SO easy-peasy!!! Promise!

distressed frame

Here’s what you’ll need for your Distressed Frame:

  • Picture Frame
  • Paint color of choice (craft paint is perfect because it dries fast)
  • Small Paint Brush or a Foam craft paintbrush
  • Papertowel
  • Newspaper or something to cover painting area
  • *Dark Coat of paint if needed (brown or black) to age your frame. Read below.

*If your frame is originally light in color (silver or white) you’ll need a darker paint to give it an aged look. This dark shade will be dry brushed onto your frame after your first coats of paint. My frame to start with was already dark so I didn’t need to use a darker shade afterwards.

How to distress your frame:

  • Remove the back and the glass from your frame.
  • Lay the frame to be painted on newspaper or plastic. Something to keep area underneath protected.
  • Using a small paintbrush or a foam brush, apply a thin layer of paint on the frame. Cover the entire area.
  • Before it dries completely, use a paper towel or a cloth and rub over the raised areas of the frame to remove some of the paint. You can also rub off some of the edges and corners for a worn appearance.

*If you’re starting with a light colored frame, you don’t need to do this step by rubbing off the paint. You’ll use a darker shade of paint to distress your frame. Read below.

  • Add a second coat of paint if you’re wanting a richer deeper color. I wanted the dark to show through the white pretty heavy, so I only added a very thin second coat just to cover brush strokes.
  • Again, rub a cloth or paper towel over the raised areas, edges and corners. You can remove as little or as much as you want depending on the look you’re going for.
  • Allow it to dry completely before adding photo, glass and backing.

frame recipes(This is the finished product. You can click over and read my Framing Old Recipes post if you’d like. It’s a great way to showcase those old family favorite recipes!)

Distressing a Light Colored Frame

* If your frame is light in color to begin with, you’ll want to add a dry coat of brown or black to give your distressed frame some age using a dry brush technique. Here’s how you can do that.

  • Use the technique above to paint your frame the color of your choice and let it dry completely.
  • Using another small paintbrush, dip it into the darker shade of paint and blot it quite a bit on a paper towel or your paint tray until it’s almost completely dry.
  • Making sure the brush is almost dry, blot the darker color paint in the areas you want to look distressed. The raised areas, corners and edges are a great place to add that darker color for a worn look.

Make sure not to lay too much paint in these areas because it can ruin the effect. If you’re not used to using the dry brush technique – I HIGHLY suggest that you practice on another frame before applying it to the one you’re working on. That way you’ll be better prepared.

Let us know how your distressed frame turned out! We’d love to hear and please, share photos with us! We’d love to see them too!

Easy DIY Valentine Snack and Candy Bouquet

February 13, 2014 by Jenni 1,519 Comments

Valentine’s Day is almost here!! I’m one of those who wonder around the store forever looking at things to get the husband. Something besides a sappy card. Coffee mugs?! He has a gazillion.

T-shirt?! Have you SEEN our closet?! Like he needs more clothes, pfft. A gift card? Too impersonal, especially for V-day. I shoud pay him back for the year he bought me a dust buster for Valentine’s Day (true story!) but I love his guts out so I won’t do that to him.

He’s a snacker so I thought it’d be fun to put together a Valentine Candy Bouquet. Well, it’s more of a candy/snacky bouquet but you get the drift. Everything he loves, and since I love him…he’ll love ME for buying him everything he loves. Love, love, love!

candy bouquet

I made a quick trip to the Dollar General before picking little man up from school. My intention was to quickly grab a few things, but then that turned into an oooh and aaaaah fest over in the housewares aisle, I got side-tracked and almost didn’t make it to the school in time but I made it. Got home, then realized…

I Forgot to buy a basket to put his candy bouquet in. Ugh.

Soooo….what’s a girl to do? Take an Easter basket and cover it with girly pink heart-shaped sticky notes! Well, that’s what I did.

Candy BouquetOnce I got home, I ransacked the house looking for something to put his stuff in. I found my son’s Easter Basket which was red (oh, thank goodness!) but it had baseballs all over the rim of it. I had NO pink or red ribbon to cover it but I got creative and stuck these heart shaped sticky notes all around the edge with tape. I never claimed to be Martha Stewart! 🙂

candy bouquetOhh AND I couldn’t find any skewers or popsicle sticks at the Dollar store so I grabbed a pack of cute Valentine’s Day pencils. I figured that would work! There’s one attached to a mini box of Russel Stover candy. 🙂

Okay, now that I’ve given you all the details of my morning – and I’m apparently a pro at doing the best with what I have – let’s get to it.

How to make a DIY Candy Bouquet

  • Any basket (or a cute bucket) will work…you can even spray paint an old one if you need to.
  • Add styrofoam to the inside…this is what you’ll stick the skewers or popsicle sticks (or pencils) into. My piece of styrofoam filled the basket a little over half way. Since I was using pencils vs. long skewers, I knew I had to have more height.
  • Glue or tape a skewer or popsicle stick to each item, leaving enough room so that the food will show above the basket edge. Like you would with a flower bouquet, you’ll start out shorter in front and taller towards the back.
  • Just keep adding and layering until you’ve A. ran out of space or B. used everything you have.
  • If all else fails or you don’t trust your own skills, you can always buy an already made Candy Bouquet on Amazon.

Here are a few shots of his cute lil’ candy bouquet!

candy bouquetI really want to dig into his bag of cashews…but I’ll leave them be.

I know he’ll love it and I hope he doesn’t see this post before he gets it….eeeeeeeep!!

Happy Heart Day!!!

Frame Recipes – The Perfect Way to Display Mom or Grandma’s Recipes

February 3, 2014 by Jenni 1,302 Comments

My mom’s recipes were always stored in an old metal antique recipe box. We have many memories of that old recipe box. Every year, my sisters and I would gather at mom and dads to make our Thanksgiving Day dinner shopping list and we’d pull out the old box.

Since mom passed away, my sisters and I share the old box. It’s filled with all of mom’s precious hand-written recipes that she’d gathered over the years…some of which were recipes that belonged to her own granny.

One sweet idea is to frame recipes – some of your family favorites recipes. Old hand-written recipes that belong to your mom or grandma. It’s a great way to preserve them and display them in your kitchen and it’s really easy to do. One of my favorite recipes of my mom’s was one that I helped her make since I was itty-bitty…monkey bread (that’s the link to the actual recipe). The other recipe that is in the frame is her Hot Cider Punch. Yum.

frame recipes

It’s super simple to frame recipes!

My sister gave me these 2 recipes of moms in a frame. I did end up painting the frame a chippy white and added a bit of brown kraft paper behind the recipes. It’s really simple to frame recipes. All you need to do is pick which recipe(s) you want to frame and then find a frame that it will fit in. More than likely you already have a frame that will work.

frame recipes

You can always paint the frame and add scrapbooking paper or even brown kraft paper like I used as a sort of matte. I just used a glue stick to stick the kraft paper down to the frame backing.

frame recipes

I love all of the character in these recipes…grease spots, splatters, even a heart cut out in the piece of paper. You’ll also notice the recipe on the index card at the bottom has “Granny” in parenthesis.  {love}

frame recipes

Just make sure that whatever picture frame you use will compliment the recipe AND your kitchen. It will become a piece of art and a beautiful and memorable keepsake that you’ll eventually hand down to your own kids.

If you paint your frame, be sure to add a clear coat as well. That way you’ll be able to dust and wash the frame if/when needed. Hang it somewhere safe so that grease won’t splatter on it (since it’s going in the kitchen). I added a small piece of rope on the frame to hang it by and it hangs right by my back door in the kitchen. It’s definitely a piece that I treasure.

Giving framed recipes to those you love is SUCH a great gifting idea. Handed down recipes are treasures.

Mason Jar Lamp

If you enjoyed this post, then you might like my DIY Mason Jar Lamp (<– click to read how we made it) idea too! I made a mason jar lamp out of an old glass jar of buttons that belonged to my mom. We love it!! I’d love to hear what you think about my framed recipes! Leave us a comment below!!!
