Switch Your Dog’s Dinner Up with Alpo Meal Helpers!

September 21, 2015 by Jenni 1,630 Comments

This post brought to you by Purina at Dollar General. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Sweet Pennies From Heaven.

alpo-meal-helpers-1 I love pizza, and I say that I could probably eat it every day of my life, but I think that’s really a bit of a stretch. Okay, maybe not….but you’re feelin’ me, right? Do you ever think that your dogs are feeling the same way? Like, do you ever think that they’re thinking, “Geeze mom……do I have to eat the SAME thing EVERY. SINGLE. DAY?!” They like to switch things up a bit too! Purina has created the NEW Alpo Meal Helpers and you can find them at Dollar General! It adds a little “sum’n – sum’n” to their regular dog food. Simply add the Alpo Meal Helpers to your dog’s dry food. I really like these because they’re soft and not messy at all, like wet dog food can be. Bleck.

alpo-meal-helpers-2 Each no mess mealtime mixer is in a 4 oz. package and you get 4 pouches to a box! Plus they come in yummy flavors like Porterhouse and Prime Rib, and Roast Beef and Chicken.

alpo-meal-helpers-4 Izzy, our boxer, LOVED it. She didn’t come up for air until the whole plate was GONE. We hadn’t been outside 2 seconds when she started sniffing the air. She could smell the yummy-ness and was on the hunt for it. If you’re looking for an easy way to switch up your dog’s dinner, check the Alpo Meal Helpers out on your next trip to Dollar General! They’re around $2 a box, so it’s a nice deal too! When you grab a box, share a photo of your dog enjoying it on Instagram using the hashtag #AlpoMealHelpers! The dog with the most shares will win an Alpo prize pack with a coupon for a free Alpo Meal Helper & Alpo biscuits plus a $100 Dollar General gift card!! Be sure to check out other Dollar General Alpo Products!

Which flavor do you think your dog would love?

— Alright….now on to those doggie essentials!

List of 7 Things Every Dog Needs

what does my dog need - 7 dog essentials

1. Squeezes, Smooches & Belly Rubs: Love those babies up! Dogs love hugs, kisses and good belly rubs! My dogs are both attention hogs. They love to be loved.

2. Healthy Food and Vitamins: Make sure that you’re feeding your dogs a healthy dog food, like Purina and pay attention to how it makes them feel. Some dogs need a special diet…others could eat an army tank and it wouldn’t bother their bellies! You can also give your sweet hearts vitamins if they’re picky eaters!

3. Yummy Nummy Treats: Give them a treat through the day! Even if they can’t do tricks – give them a treat just for being cute! Treats are a great reward for doing something right too whether it’s house breaking them or for coming when you call them. Purina makes ex

cellent treats. Our dogs love the Beggin Strips!

4. Toys, Toys and More Toys: I think our dogs have more toys than our kid does. Ropes, squeaky toys, toys with bells, balls, and even an occasional old shoe. Ugh. Yeah. They like shoes!

5. Control the critters: Keep your dogs treated for fleas, ticks and worms. I know, I knowww….gross! But we all have to deal with it when we have dogs! Whether you choose a drop on medication, flea collar or something natural – just make sure you’re treating them so they don’t get sick. Fleas and ticks SUCK – literally!

6. Doctor Visits and Clean Toofers: Yep! Make sure to always keep your dogs up to date on checkups and shots. Having a sick pet is no fun. One thing our vet always talks about is keeping their teeth clean. A dog with bag teeth means poor health. Just keep their teeth clean with a toothbrush or make sure to give them treats that help clean their teeth.

7. Outer Space: Okay, not that kind of outer space….but space outside to RUN and play! If you don’t have a fenced in area – then put up a lead that’s long enough for them to have plenty of space to run and play. My dogs love to be outside…especially right after a bath. They love to roll around in the grass and dirt when they get bathed. Ugh. Hahaha!

1. Getting Waterlogged

If you have a swimming pool, SWEET! Make sure to load up on pool toys or water toys! Floats, beach balls, goggles, game sets, noodles and squirt guns or soakers make for hours of fun! We snagged some squirt soakers and a Frozen beach ball. The kids love these and always have so much fun.

2. Sunscreen & Soothers

I know that summer just isn’t summer without a flaming sunburn but we DO need to try to prevent them! We’re all really fair skinned around here and burn wayyyy too easily. I loaded up on some sunscreen, lip protector and sunglasses at Dollar General. Make sure to grab extra to keep in your beach bags for on the go too! Don’t forget to grab some Aloe gel for soothing sunburns (just in case!).

Cooking outside is fun. We love to grill…the food just always tastes better, right?! We got everything we needed in one trip! Paper plates, condiments like ketchup and mustard. Those are the biggies at our house! Don’t forget the disposable cups, silverware and ohh, ohhh…don’t forget the aluminum foil! We always run out when we do tons of grilling!

4. Drinks & Freezer Treats

If your house is like ours, the kids can run in and out, and in and out, alllll day long. Usually after something to drink. We keep bottled water on hand all the time anyway, and we always stock up on the Clover Valley bottled water from Dollar General. They always have really great deals on juice, Kool-Aid, and those boxes of freezer pops!

5. Keep the Kids from Getting HANGRY

Always, ALWAYS keep snacks around so the kids don’t wig out! My kiddo gets super cranky when he’s hungry so I make sure to have healthier snacks on hand between meals for him. Dollar General always has such a great selection of snack foods and groceries! Now, mommy will sneak and get the Clover Valley cookies. Have you had them? Mercy!! I keep a stash hid for myself.

How You Can Do More With Your Dollar to Help Improve Kids Reading Skills

April 7, 2015 by Jenni 306 Comments

This post brought to you by Purina. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Sweet Pennies From Heaven.

eli reading Reading is one of THE most important skills a child will learn. My little guy loves to read, thank goodness. That’s why I’m excited to tell you about what’s going on with Purina and Dollar General! During April, shoppers can Do More With Their Dollar. Not only will they save on Purina pet products, but they will also help improve kids reading skills and self confidence!

reading-1 Purina has partnered with Dollar General to grow awareness and share the importance of literacy. I had NO idea, but studies have actually shown that when kids read to their pets, their reading skills and confidence improve! Say what??!! How incredibly awesome is that?! I’ve never thought about it before, but it totally makes sense. Sooo, we’re reading to our pet. Little man and daddy are reading a new book to Izzy, our boxer. She’s a captive audience, I tell you.

In 2010, the University of California did a 10-week study where young children read out loud to dogs and the result showed a 12% increase in their reading skills! Kids feel more relaxed and they know that their pets are faithful and true. Kids naturally enjoy interacting with their pets and pets teach so many great lessons to our children. Make sure to visit Dollar General and find out all of the other ways that pets can make a difference in the lives of your kids!

do more with your dollar

Back to School on a Budget with Dollar General

July 30, 2014 by 2,032 Comments

This post brought to you by Dollar General. All opinions are 100% mine.

I was recently given the challenge of shopping for back to school with Dollar General with just $35.  I am not a frequent shopper at Dollar General but I do love a good challenge!  Seriously, I love it.  Since we homeschool, I am always on the lookout for great deals to help me stock up on supplies for the year.  I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the school supply selection at our local Dollar General store.  I knew this challenge would be a BREEZE! Back to School on a Budget with Dollar General The first thing I did was head over to the Dollar General site to see what the latest sale ad contained.  There were some AMAZING prices on things like pencils, notebooks, erasers and even Kleenex!  I also spied, with my little eye, a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $25 or more.  Yep.  Easy peasy for this challenge.  So, of course, I scoured the ad and made a list of all the items we needed.  I kept a tally of the price (rounding up for tax) as I went.  I was satisfied with my list and headed to the store! When I arrived, I was pleased to see that most of the items in the sale ad were readily available in the school supplies section of Dollar General.  There were a few things that were a little different and some had slightly different prices than I had planned for.  That’s ok though because I still had that nice $5 off coupon.  I did some quick figuring in my head and went to loading my cart with everything that was on my list! Back to School with Dollar General Collage Here’s my list:

  • 4 boxes of Kleenex (75 Count)
  • 6 packs of filler paper (125 sheets each)
  • 9 One subject spiral notebooks
  • 2 Three subject spiral notebooks
  • 1 pack of 4 mechanical pencils (I threw these in extra.  They weren’t on my original list.)
  • 2 packs of  fashion pencils (8 per pack)
  • 2 packs of fashion erasers (rectangular 2 per pack)
  • 4 Three ring binders with clear view covers
  • 8 Capri Sun big pouch drinks
  • 1 Fashion journal (I threw this in extra.  It wasn’t on my original list.)

That is a total of 39 items!!  Do you think I met the challenge? Here’s my receipt: Back to School on a Budget Dollar General Receipt So I was over by $6.34!  That was pretty much the cost + tax for the 2 extras that I added at the last minute.  Had I not bought the journal and mechanical pencils, I would have come in right at my budget!  Not too shabby considering I am not a regular shopper at Dollar General and the few price differences I was met with.  I am pretty proud of how it turned out! Now…what will you be stocking up on for back to school?  Whatever it is, I recommend visiting your local Dollar General to stock up on savings!
